Elcaribe elongatus Webb View in CoL spec. nov.

(Figs. 223, 237, 251, 265, 279, 293, 307, 321, 335, 347, 358)

Etymology

Elongatus (Latin) = prolonged. This name is used as an adjective and refers to the elongated gonocoxites.

Diagnosis

Elcaribe elongatus is taxonomically associated with E. bahamaensis and E. glabrus in lacking an anterodorsal patch of dark, short setae on the gena; in lacking anteroventral and posteroventral macrosetae on the midfemur; and in lacking elongate, dark macrosetae along ventromedial margin of the gonocoxite ( Fig. 237). Elcaribe elongatus differs from E. bahamaensis and E. glabrus in having the gonocoxite in ventral and lateral views ( Figs. 237, 265) attenuate and the ejaculatory apodeme ( Fig. 293) with the anterior half expanded laterally, extending beyond anterior margin of dorsal apodeme, the anterior margin pointed, and in crosssection flattened dorsoventrally with a short, ventral carina.

Description of holotype male (MEI 030441)

Body length 6.2 mm.

Head. Length 0.70 mm. Ommatidia smaller ventrally and laterally. Frons pruinescence gray, brownish gray dorsally; setae dark brown. Antenna/head length 0.77; scape black, pruinescence gray, pedicel and flagellum dark brown; scape length 0.18 mm, width 0.10 mm, length/width 1.8, scape/pedicel length 3.0, scape/flagellum width 0.71, setae dark brown, elongate, a few pale yellow setae ventrally; pedicel length 0.06 mm, length/width 0.5; first flagellomere oval, attenuate apically, flagellum length 0.30 mm, width 0.14 mm, length/width 2.1, flagellum/scape length 1.7. Parafacial pruinescence dark brown. Maxillary palpus dark yellow; length 0.42 mm, length/width 7.0; setae white, elongate. Genal setae white. Occipital setae white becoming appressed lanceolate dorsally.

Thorax. Macrosetae 3 np, 2 sa, 1 pa, 2 dc, 2 sc. Mesonotum pruinescence dull brown; setae black, elongate intermixed with pale whitish yellow lanceolate subappressed setae. Pleuron pruinescence gray; setae white on anepisternum, katepisternum, metanepisternum, and laterotergite, pale gold lanceolate on scutellum. Wing. Membrane pale gray; veins pale yellowish brown; length 4.3 mm, length/width 2.9; pterostigma indistinct; cell m 3 closed, petiolate. Halter dark yellow. Legs. Femora dark brown, pruinescence white; ventral setae white on forefemur, dark brown anteroventrally; av 3:0:8, pv 0:0:1. Tibiae dark yellow, apex dark reddish brown. Hypoproct (Fig. 223) quadrate, posterior margin slightly emarginate; apicoventral surface flat. Sternite 8 ( Fig. 237), posterior margin rounded. Gonocoxite ventral view ( Fig. 237), basal third bulbous, rounded laterally, basomedial lobe broadly rounded, posterior twothirds tapered to attenuate projection, setae dark yellow, dark reddish brown apically with an anterior patch of short, black setae; dorsal view ( Fig. 251) gonocoxal bridge large; lateral view ( Fig. 265) bulbous basally with basomedial lobe prominent, tapering apically to attenuate projection; ventral lobe ( Fig. 237) with ventral spines. Gonostylus (Fig. 279), basodorsal lobe broad, rounded; ventral margin straight, setae pale yellow, not extended apically in distinct tuft; short, fine spines abundant laterally. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme ( Fig. 293) quadrate, sides slightly emarginate, posterolateral margin rounded; ventral apodeme (Fig. 307) broad, anterior margin truncate; distiphallus dorsal view ( Fig. 293) short, broad basally, tapered to rounded point; lateral view ( Fig. 321) curved ventrally at 90° angle, subapical hood absent; ejaculatory apodeme ( Fig. 293) dark yellow, anterior half expanded laterally, extending beyond anterior margin of dorsal apodeme, anterior margin pointed, in crosssection flattened dorsoventrally with short ventral carina.

Variation (n=10). Body length 4.2–6.2, 5.2 mm. Thorax. Macrosetae 3 np, 2 sa, 1 pa, 2 dc, 2 sc. Legs. Anteroventral macrosetae 1–4:0:3–8, pv 0:0:1.

Distribution

Elcaribe elongatus has been collected in The Bahamas and the Dominican Republic ( Fig. 358).

Habitats and phenology

Adults of Elcaribe elongatus have been handnetted, collected in flight intercept traps in a deciduous forest and in blacklight traps. Specimens have been collected from 3 March to 30 November.
