Observations: No reference to any particular specimen is included in the protologue of Torresia utriculata , where only the region of collection is mentioned. One specimen collected by Ruiz & Pavón is stored in the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid Herbarium (MA), but no locality is included in the label. Parodi (1941) highlighted this specimen as the “type”, but no correct typification was carried out [Article 9.10 in Turland et al. (2018)]. Plants conserved in the Dombey and Jussieu Herbaria at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris (P, sub Torresia utriculata , P-31093, P-01931094 and P-00661399, the latter with a label that reads “ Chili. Herb. Dombey”) were considered as duplicates by Parodi (l.c.), since Dombey travelled alongside Ruíz & Pavón to Peru and Chile. It is not possible to know, however, the exact material used to describe the species, so the specimen from MA should be considered the lectotype [Article 9.17, Recommendation 9A (1&2) in Turland et al. (2018)].
