Pomatoleios kraussii .— Tromp (1978) from Pacific coast of Panama.
Material examined. Thirteen specimens: Pacific coast of Panama (Panama), ECOSUR s.n., LACM-AHF s.n., UMAR-Poly 81, 11 spec., not all studied in detail (several localities in Panama city: approx. 8º57’50”N, 79º34’10”W, Diablo Spinning Club , approx. 8º57’04”N, 79º34’26”W, Fuerte Rodman and, approx. 8º54’N, 79º31’W, Punta Culebra , May 30–31, 2002, coll. SISV); USNM 58616, 2 spec. (approx. 8º58’N, 79º31’W, Punta Paitilla, sta. 107–1, rocky intertidal, Nov. 2, 1972, coll. M.L. Jones et al.) GoogleMaps .
Diagnosis. Tube violet to grey, with longitudinal ridge, lacks peristomes or alveoli. Opercular peduncle with wide wings ( Figs 7P–Q), yellowish and smudged with brown spots. Operculum with calcareous concave plate ( Fig. 7R). Thoracic membrane extends to last thoracic chaetiger. Six thoracic chaetigers. Without collar chaetae, but with glandular spots in collar chaetae position. Eyespots present on some thoracic chaetigers.
Habitat. Depth: intertidal to 1 m. Fouling species.
Distribution. Only known from the Pacific coast of Panama ( Tromp 1978).
Taxonomic remarks. Pomatoleios sp. has a large talon in the base of the operculum ( Fig. 7R) in comparison with the talon figured by ten Hove (1973) to P. kraussii ( Fig. 7O). However, the talon and the funnelshaped operculum are similar to P. kraussii manilensis ( Pillai 1965, Fig. 22H). Pomatoleios sp. is different because the tube has only one longitudinal ridge that terminates in a spine projection over the opening, while in P. kraussii manilensis the tube has two longitudinal ridges that terminates in a flap projection over the opening.
