Diagnosis. For a revised description see Bastida-Zavala and ten Hove (2003b).
Habitat. Depth: Intertidal to 10 m. On rock and sand bottoms, on dead coral ( Pocillopora verrucosa ) and on spiny oyster Spondylus calcifer .
Distribution. Temperate and Tropical Eastern Pacific. Southern California ( USA) to Ecuador; questionably circum (sub) tropical ( Bastida-Zavala & ten Hove 2003b).
Remarks. This species belongs to a world-wide species complex, whose revision is pending. The material from Hawaii is slightly different to the American Pacific specimens with respect to the shape of the spines of the opercular verticil ( Bastida-Zavala & ten Hove 2003a).
