status

12. Pavonia sidifolia Kunth (1822: 283 View in CoL , as ‘ sidaefolia ’) ( Figures 3 View FIGURE 3 , 5m, 6l).

Holotype:—Entre Angostura e Trapiche de D. Félix Farreras ( Orinoco ), Humboldt & Bonpland 1077 ( P barcode P00679738 ! [digital image]; isotype B-W 12694 as photo F-9796)

Taxonomic notes: —The differential features are the epicalyx with seven lanceolate bracteoles, the habit erect herb to subshrub, tomentose branches and ovate leaves (2‒4.6 × 1.4‒2.8 cm). Pavonia sidifolia shares with P. cancellata the yellow petals with vinaceous basal spot. This characteristic usually leads to misidentifications of material deposited in herbarium. However, these species are differentiated for the habit (erect in P. sidifolia and prostate in P. cancellata ) and epicalyx bracteoles seven and lanceolate in P. sidifolia , and filiform, 13‒18 in P. cancellata ).

Distribution, habitat, and IUCN threat status: —Occurs in Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil ( Fryxell, 1999). In Brazil, it is registered in the Northeast (Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, Piauí and Sergipe), Midwest (Distrito Federal, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Mato Grosso), and Southeast (Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo) (Flora e Funga do Brasil, 2022). In Pernambuco it is recorded in one municipality in the Caatinga Zone, a subzone of Sertão do Araripe. It is registered in Área de Proteção Ambiental da Chapada do Araripe and presents an EOO of 14,746,687.304 Km² and an AOO of 952.000 Km². This species is here considered Least Concern (LC) for having a larger distribution and not being endemic to a phytogeographic domain.

Phenology: —Collected with flowers and fruits in May.
