This is one of the forms of M. foliata which had, according to Linnaeus, a single arcuate white band (“arcu albo”). DeGeer (l. cit.) described it as “à-qu’il n’a qu’une seule bande large transparente and jaunatre de chaque coté, qui s’étend en arc du bout antérieur jusqu’au bout postérieur [there is only one large transparent and yellow band at each side, which extends in arc from the anterior border up to the posterior border]”. Fairmaire (1846) and Walker (1858a) described the same species as M. periphaeria and M. curvilinea (Figure 5, lectotype female, BMNH), respectively.
M. foliataarcuata is very similar to M. sanguineoplaga Schmidt, 1906 , being distinguished by the absence of a red spot before the apex of the posterior process. The arcuate yellowish band extends from the margin of the anterior lobe of metopidium, in front of the head, until near apex of posterior process, curved above humeral angles, then close to lateral margins.
Material examined
Membracis curvilinea Walker (lectotype ♀, BMNH). Additional non-type material from FRENCH GUYANA: “Cayenne” (1♀, NHRS).
