Type Locality: Paraguay, Asunción (restricted by Cabrera, 1958).
Vernacular Names: Common Vampire Bat.
Synonyms: Desmodus cinerea D'Orbigny 1834 ; Desmodus dorbignyi Waterhouse 1838 ; Desmodus ecaudatus Schinz 1821 ; Desmodus fuscus Burmeister 1854 ; Desmodus mordax Burmeister 1879 ; Desmodus murinus Wagner 1840 ; Desmodus rufus Wied-Neuwied 1824 .
Distribution: Uruguay, N Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and N Chile north to Sonora, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas ( Mexico); Margarita Isl ( Venezuela); Trinidad.
Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).
