Quercus novomexicana (A.DC.) Rydb., Bull. View in CoL New York Bot. Gard. 2(6): 208 (1901).
Quercus stellata Wagenh. var. utahensis A.DC, Prodr. 16(2.1): 22 (1864). Type :— U.S.A. (Holotype: MO?). According to A. de Candolle (1864, p. 22) the type was collected between Salt Lake and the Sierra Nevada. The specimen was from the “(h. Engelm.!)” so it should be at MO .
Quercus undulata Torr. var. gambelii (Nutt.) Engelm., Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis View in CoL 3: 382 (1876).
Quercus utahensis (A.DC.) Rydberg, Bull. View in CoL New York Bot. Gard. 2(6): 202 (1901).
Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora, Veracruz), U.S.A. (Arizona, Colorado, Nevada,
New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Wyoming).
Quercus germana Schltdl. & Cham., Linnaea View in CoL 5(1): 78 (1830). Type :— MEXICO, Veracruz: C. J. W. Schiede 21 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): HAL0060343 About HAL !; isolectotypes: GOET (image)!, HBG (image)!, LE!, M!) .
Quercus germana var. echinata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 52 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: L. Hahn 344 (Lectotype (designated here): P00754016 !). Trelease (1924, p. 52) did not indicate place of deposit for Hahn 344, but most of the Hahn specimens he cites were at B and now destroyed. The only specimen of Hahn that we found was at P; it was annotated by Trelease in 1913 as an isotype.
Quercus substenocarpa Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 52, pl. 41 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, San Luis Potosí: C. G. Pringle 3969 (Holotype: BR0000006915407 !; isotypes: A!, BM!, E!, F!, G!, GH!, K!, MEL (image)!, MO!, NY!, P!, PH!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!).
Distribution: Mexico (Coahuila, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis
Potosí, Tamaulipas, Veracruz).
Quercus glabrescens Benth., Pl. Hartw. 56 (1840). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: T. Hartweg 428 (Lectotype (designated here): K000512603 !; isolectotypes: A!, BM!, CGE!, E!, FI!, G!, K!, L!, LD (image)!, LE!, NY!, OXF!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). There are two sheets of Hartweg 428 at K in the Bentham Herbarium, one of which is here lectotypified.
Quercus ambigua Bonpl., Pl.Aequinoct. 2: 51, pl. 93 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: A. Bonpland 4162 (Holotype: P00129745 !; isotypes: B-W (as s.n.)!, UCSB (fragment from P holotype)!).
Quercus bonplandiana Sweet, Hort. Brit. 370 (1826). This is an invalid name as the holotype is the same as Q. ambigua Bonpl.
Quercus glabrescens var. integrifolia Liebm. ex A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 35 (1864). Type :— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3488 (Lectotype: C 10012484! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 217, pl. 34b); isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, UCSB (fragment)!). A . de Candolle cited “Liebm.! h. Copenh. f. 165–167.” These numbers are three Cupulif. Lbm. sheet numbers for Liebmann 3488. Trelease effectively lectotypified sheet 166 at C . Sheet 167 is at C as well as a fragment at UCSB, and sheet 165 is now at CAS.
Quercus radlkoferiana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 49, pl. 35a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: F. M. Liebmann 3483 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): C 10012485!; isolectotypes: C!, CAS!, GH!, M!, UCSB (fragment from C lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!). Trelease (1924, p. 49) indicated that “ Liebmann, 156, 3483 ” is the type, so the specimen of Cupulif. Lbm. 156 at C would apparently be the holotype. However, in the caption of pl. 35a on p. 217 Trelease wrote “The type Mexico, Liebmann, 156 ” and indicates that this image was taken at B. It would seem more likely that the specimen at B would have had just the number 3483 on it, which is an assigned number for a particular collection, rather than just Liebmann 156 which is an assigned number for individual sheets. Because the specimen at B was destroyed, and the label is not shown in Trelease’s pl. 35a, it is impossible to know for certain what was on the B label. For this reason, we are lectotypifying the C specimen Cupulif. Lbm. 156.
Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Ciudad de México, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán,
Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. glabrescens in Querétaro and Tamaulipas reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.
Quercus glaucescens Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 2: 29, pl. 78 (1809). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: A. Bonpland 3921 (Holotype: P00129726 !; isotypes: B-W!, CGE (as s.n.)!, UCSB (fragment from P holotype)!). Although the specimen at P is marked as an isotype, it is actually the holotype and has a description in Bonpland’s hand.
Quercus chinantlensis Liebm., Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 179 (1854) View in CoL . Type :— MEXICO, Oaxaca: F. M. Liebmann 3471 (Lectotype: C 10012469! designated by Trelease (1924, p. 41, pl. 28b); isolectotypes: C!, CAS!) .
Quercus cuneifolia Liebm. View in CoL non Raf. (1838), Overs. Kongel. Danske Vidensk. Selsk. Forh. Medlemmers Arbeider 1854: 182 (1854). See Q. pinalensis View in CoL below.
Quercus nigrirhachis Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 314 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 493 (Holotype: at B destroyed). The determination of Q. nigrirhachis View in CoL as probably Q. glaucescens View in CoL is based on the Trelease (1934) description as no images or original specimens exist.
Quercus pinalensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 46, pl. 28a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Sinaloa: B. Seemann 1456 (Holotype: K000512594 !; isotypes: BM!, K!). Nom. nov. for Q. cuneifolia Liebm. (1854) View in CoL non Raf. (1838). The holotype is the K specimen with the determination by Liebmann in his hand.
Quercus synthetica Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 151, pl. 297a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: A. Ghiesbreght 121 (Holotype: C 10012534!; isotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment from C holotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus synthetica var. crenifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 151, pl. 296 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Veracruz: A. Ghiesbreght 117 (Holotype: P00754020 !; isotypes: P!, UCSB (fragment)!).
Quercus texquitzinae Trel., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 33: 315 (1934). Type:— MEXICO, Guerrero: L. Schultze 32 (Holotype: at B destroyed). We suspect that Q. texquitzinae View in CoL is probably Q. glaucescens View in CoL based on the Trelease (1934) description as no images or original specimens exist.
Distribution: Mexico (Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis
Potosí, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Veracruz).
Quercus glaucoides M.Martens & Galeotti, Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles View in CoL 10(1): 209 (1843). Type :— MEXICO, Oaxaca: H. Galeotti 103 (Lectotype: BR0000009816220 !designated by Trelease (1924 p. 217.pl. 42);isolectotypes: BR!, G!, K!, P!, UCSB (fragment from BR lectotype)!, UCSB (fragment)!). M . Martens & Galeotti cite only one collection number, two sheets of which are at BR ; either one could be considered the type. Breedlove annotated the better of these two specimens as the holotype in 1987, but Trelease had already effectively lectotypified the other specimen. The specimen which is the lectotype would be a much better specimen had C. H . Muller not removed a small branch, apparently in 1958, which is now at UCSB .
Quercus baldoquinae Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 53, pl. 43b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: R. Endlich 1354 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 43b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name on the image of the holotype.
Quercus cancellata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 55, pl. 49a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: H. Schenk 236 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 49a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.
Quercus conjugens Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 55, pl. 48 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Guanajuato: C. G. Pringle 8841 (Lectotype (designated here): G00410068 !; isolectotypes: A!, BM!, CAS!, E!, F!, FI!, G!, GH!, HBG (image)!, ILL!, K!, L!, M!, MEXU!, MO!, NY!, P!, PH!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!). Trelease (1924) indicated that the type was at B, now destroyed, and at G.
Quercus cordata M.Martens & Galeotti, Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles View in CoL 10(1): 211 (1843). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: H. Galeotti 111 (Holotype: BR0000009816237 !; isotype: UCSB (fragment from BR holotype)!).
Quercus glaucophylla Seemen, Bot. Jahrb. Syst. View in CoL 29(1): 95 (1900). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: C. G. Pringle 4843 (Holotype: BR0000009816374 !; isotypes: A!, BM!, CAS!, E!, ENCB (image)!, G!, GH!, K!, KFTA (image)!, MEL (image)!, MEXU!, MO!, NDG (image)!, NY!, P!, PH!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!, VT!).
Quercus glaucophylla f. tlacolulana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 53 (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Oaxaca: C. Seler & E. G . Seler 1752 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): GH00062248 !) .
Quercus harmsiana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 54, pl. 45b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Michoacán: R. Endlich 1356 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 45b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.
Quercus mixtecana Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 54 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: C. Conzatti 1416 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): GH00969954 !; isolectotype: A!). No extant specimens of the type number, Schenck 235, from Puebla have been found, so the lectotype is based on the paratype, Conzatti 1416, from Oaxaca .
Distribution: Mexico (Chiapas, Chihuahua, Ciudad de México, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo,
Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz ).

Quercus acutifolia Neé f. abrupta Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 192 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Colima: H. Ross 534 (Lectotype (designated here): M!). Although Trelease (1924, p. 192) cited Ross 534, he did not specify the herbarium.
Quercus grahamii f. brevipes Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 190, pl. 384a (1924). Type :— MEXICO, Veracruz: F. M. Liebmann 3437 (Holotype: C 10012490!; isotypes: CAS!, K (as s.n.)!, P (as s.n.)!). The caption of Trelease’s plate (1924, p. 229, pl. 384a) states “The type (Mexico, Liebmann, 33=3437). Photographed by permission at Kew.” The photograph in the plate of Liebmann 3437 (Cupulif. Lbm. 33) is of the specimen at C .
Quercus grahamii var. nelsonii Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 190, pl. 384b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Oaxaca: E. W. Nelson 533 (Holotype: US 00089534!; isotype: US!) .
Quercus xalapensis Bonpl. f. surculina Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 193, pl. 393b (1924). Type :— MEXICO: W. F. Karwinski s. n. (Holotype: M!; isotype: UCSB (fragment from M holotype)!).
Distribution: Mexico (Colima, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla,
Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz).
