Distribution. Widely distributed in Australia, including Tasmania and Lord Howe Island (Moore in Moore et al. 1987); introduced to New Zealand where it is now also widely distributed ( Larochelle & Larivière 2005).
Comparison. As a member of Anisodactylina , this species distinctly differs from Harpalus parvulus and H. australasiae in having paragossae glabrous, male pro- and mesotarsi with spongy adhesive vestiture ventrally, and aedeagus with apical capitulum in dorsal position. In external features, it is recognizable by relatively wider head and pronotum, and additionally differs from H. parvulus in having pronotum much more strongly narrowed basally and with basal angles more widely rounded, and from H. australasiae in having metafemur ventrally with four or five setae along posterior margin and pronotal basal edge with distinct setae. The dorsal microsculpture in Hypharpax australis is very distinct, throughout clearly isodiametric.
