Holotype. ♂, PERU: CU, La Convención , Quillabamba, Poromate, 1600 m. 11 November 2007. A. Rodriguez ( MEKRB).

Diagnosis

Male. Synosis rubinus is easily distinguished because it is the only species that has the mesosoma reddish except for the blackish propodeum and metapleura. The remainders of New World species are blackish.

Description

Male. Total length 4.9 mm; fore wing length 6 mm. Antenna with 35 flagellomeres, first flagellomere c.1.7× as long as centrally broad, subapical flagellomeres elongate, c.1.8× as long as centrally broad, clearly longer than broad; lateral ocellus separated from compound eye by c.1.0× ocellar diameter; face c.0.9× as wide as long, coarsely punctate; mandibles not twisted, slightly tapered, with upper tooth very slightly broader and longer than lower tooth; malar space c.1.3× as long as basal mandibular width; gena, in lateral view, c.0.6× as long as compound eyes. Mesosoma generally with coarse punctures except for pronotum polished, with band of setae along upper and posterior margin, elsewhere bare; notauli extending to centre; epomia strong, almost reaching upper margin of pronotum; mesoscuto-mesoscutellar groove deep, wide and scrobiculate; mesoscutellum with longitudinal lateral carinae extending to apex; metapleuron polished, with band of setae along upper margin, elsewhere bare; submetapleural carina anteriorly expanded into conspicuous triangular lobe. Propodeum with lateromedian longitudinal carinae anteriorly converging, anterior transverse carina present between longitudinal carinae; lateromedian longitudinal carina present behind posterior transverse carina. Fore wing with abscissa of Cul between 1m-cu and Cu1a c.2.5× as long as Culb; cu-a postfurcal. Metasoma with tergite I moderately slender, c.1.1× as long as posteriorly broad, lateromedian carinae extending to posterior margin of tergite, in dorsal view coarsely punctate; tergite II coarsely punctate, c.0.9× as long as posteriorly broad; tergite III–VI similarly sculptured; laterotergites I and II well developed, laterotergite II c.0.43× wide as long. Head extensively yellow on face, filling malar space and extending back towards occiput and up to frons along inner orbits; palpi, ventral part of scape, mandibles and remainder black. Mesosoma predominantly reddish except for propodeum and lower portions which are blackish; submetapleural carina hyaline. Metasoma black. Legs predominantly orange except pro-pretarsal arolium and ungues, basal portions of mesotarsomeres one and two, entirety of mesotarsomeres three to five, metatibial spurs, and metatasomeres one to four infuscate, and anterior portion of metacoxa, apical part of metafemur, basal area of metatibia and metatarsomere five blackish. Wings hyaline; pterostigma brown.
