( Figs 5–6 View FIGURES 1–6 , 23 View FIGURE 23 )
New record. A male from Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil, collected by Hebert Miers, without date of collection, deposited at the DZUP-OM, voucher code OM 67.518 ( Figs 5–6 View FIGURES 1–6 ) .
Comments. Pachythone sumare was only known from its type locality on the hilltop of the Morro do Sumaré, Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro municipality, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil ( Callaghan 1999). The new record extends the distribution of the species more than 700 km southwards ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 ). Additional records of P. sumare between Rio de Janeiro and Joinville are unknown, even though the area was and still is regularly sampled, including by a long-term inventory of butterflies conducted in the Baixada Santista region, São Paulo state ( Francini et al. 2011), a potential area of occurrence of P. sumare . No detailed information about the collection of the male specimen of P. sumare in Joinville is provided on the label; however, many specimens of other species from this locality collected by Mr. Miers were collected in a few known hilltops (e.g. the “Serrinha” hilltop). It is possible that the species was also collected when hilltoping, a typical behavior of P. sumare in its type locality ( Callaghan 1999), and for other species of the genus (DRD, pers. obs.; Gallard 2017). Further fieldwork in hilltops of low to mid-elevation in the Atlantic Forest along the southeastern and southern coast may help to unveil the geographical distribution of P. sumare and reveal its still unknown female.
