Myrcia urbaniana (Burret) Flickinger
status

3.27. Myrcia urbaniana (Burret) Flickinger View in CoL (in Flickinger et al. 2020: 471). Mitranthes urbaniana Burret (1941: 537) . Type:— JAMAICA. Near Troy, unknown date, Perkins 977 (herbarium not cited [not found]).

The sixteen species listed above were described in Calyptranthes (except M. urbaniana ), many of them from the Caribbean region. The genus circumscription is nearly coincident with Myrcia sect. Calyptranthes , which is the most recognisable section of Myrcia . The taxon has a sympodial branching that allows the identification even in sterile specimens. Only its sister group, Myrcia sect. Sympodiomyrcia , consistently displays this feature, but the calyx lobes are free in this section (vs. fused in M. sect. Calyptranthes ) and the distribution is restricted to South America. Most of the protologues of these species describe sympodial branching and/or winged twig, and/or calyptrate flowers, which could allow their placement in Myrcia sect. Calyptranthes . However, their types were not found, making it impossible to be sure about the validity of the names (Burton et al. in prep.). As a result, all the sixteen species listed above are regarded as incompletely known taxa.
