Myrcia cionei (Mattos) Mazine
status

2.1. Myrcia cionei (Mattos) Mazine View in CoL (in Mazine et al. 2014: 98). Myrcianthes cionei Mattos (1971: 2) . Type:— BRAZIL. São Paulo, Pariquera-Açu , June 1971, J.R.Mattos 15612 (holotype HB [image!]; isotype SP [image!] [lost in transit]) .

Myrcia cionei View in CoL was originally described in Myrcianthes View in CoL , probably based on the uniflorous or dichotomous inflorescence, although the protologue is not clear about the generic placement. Grifo (1992) suggested that the species could be part of Myrciinae due to its myrcioid embryo (not described in the protologue). Based on this, Mazine et al. (2014) transferred the species to Myrcia View in CoL . However, the inflorescence structure and flower bud morphology are very unusual in Myrcia View in CoL . Dichotomous inflorescences and a myrcioid embryo are also found in Myrceugenia O. Berg (1855 View in CoL –1856: 131), yet this genus does not have two ovules per locule as found in Myrcia cionei View in CoL . We maintain this species in Myrcia View in CoL as it is the best name available for now, but a more certain placement in Myrteae is still needed and will be probably achieved only when the taxon is sampled in a phylogenetic context.
