Primulavorus maculata Konstantinov and Ruan , new species

( Figs 4–7 View FIGURE 4 View FIGURE 5 View FIGURE 6 View FIGURE 7 )

Etymology. The new species is named after the yellowish patches on elytra.

Distribution. China.

Host plant. Primula sp. ( Primulaceae ) ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ).

Description. Dorsum dark brown, with yellow spots near humeral callus and apex of elytra. Body length: 2.00– 2.20 mm. Body width (widest point of elytra): 1.15–1.25 mm. Body length to width ratio: 1.70–1.80. Pronotum width to length ratio: 1.70–1.80. Pronotum width at base to width at apex ratio: 1.25–1.30. Elytron length (measured along suture) to width of both ratio: 1.20–1.25. Length of elytron to length of pronotum ratio: 2.00–2.10. Width of elytra at base (measured across middle of humeral calli) to width of pronotum at base ratio: 1.10–1.15.

Vertex glabrous, shiny, without punctures or with a few minute scattered punctures; 1–2 punctures situated on supraorbital sulcus. Greatest width of frontal ridge about 1.5 times as that of antennal sockets. Supraorbital and orbital sulci well developed. Supraantennal sulcus shallow. Supracallinal sulci deep, straight and oblique to each other. Supraorbital, orbital and supraantennal sulci together forms V-shape. Frontolateral sulcus poorly developed. Orbit wide, about 1.5 times diameter of antennal socket. Proportionate length of antennomeres 1 to 11: 1.00–1.13, 0.50–0.58, 0.45–0.48, 0.48–0.53, 0.63–0.67, 0.55–0.63, 0.68–0.70, 0.70–0.75, 0.70–0.73, 0.70–0.73, 1.00–1.13. Length to width ratio of antennomeres 1 to 11: 2.22–2.25, 1.35–1.50, 1.50–1.58, 1.40–1.50, 1.84–1.87, 1.50–1.60, 1.50–1.56, 1.43–1.47, 1.47–1.53, 1.40–1.45, 2.00–2.25.

Length of metafemur (excluding trochanter) to maximum width ratio: 1.70–1.75. Length to width of metatibia in lateral view ratio: 6.00–6.10. Width of metatibia at base to width at apex in dorsal view ratio: 0.50–0.55. Length of metatibia to length of first metatarsomere ratio: 3.45–3.50. Length of metafemur to metatibia ratio: 1.05–1.10. Length of first metatarsomere to length of second metatarsomere ratio: 2.00–2.10. Last visible tergite in female wider than long.

Apex of aedeagus acutely pointed in lateral view; in ventral view, a little wider proximally, abruptly narrowed apically. Ventral groove on aedeagus absent distally, poorly developed basally. Receptacle of spermatheca a little longer than two times width; duct about two times longer than receptacle, highly twisted, not coiled; pump sharply curved, shorter than receptacle, without denticle at apex. Vaginal palpi narrowed towards apex, apex inwardly curved.

Sexual dimorphism. Posterior margin of last male ventrite broadly lobed in middle with sharp emargination on either side of the lobe. In female, posterior margin of last ventrite is evenly concave.

Variability. A few specimens collected outside the type locality (e.g., Yunnan, env. of Lijang 3009m 28.V.2002 N27°03'56" E100°15'28") are darker with more conspicuous yellow spots on elytra. However, there is little variation in the shape of the aedeagus. Hence all of them are treated as conspecific. GoogleMaps
