Diagnosis. Antennae relatively elongate, flagellomere VIII deeply plumose distally, flagellomeres IV–VII all short and approximately equal in length; face round, yellow with erect, white setae; scutum and scutellum black; male abdomen strongly petiolate; male occiput black; hind basitarsus whitish basally.

Description. Body length = 9.0 mm. Head. Black and yellow; frons flat; face broadly rounded, yellowish brown with erect, white setae; parafacial yellow with narrow margin of silver pubescence along eye; ocellar tubercle black; postocular ridge yellow, not carinate in male; occiput flat, black, covered with white setal pile; antenna (length = 3.0 mm) with scape and pedicel and flagellomeres I–V dark yellow, flagellomeres VI–VIII black, flagellomeres V–VII relatively short and combined length equal to length of flagellomere I, ratio of length of flagellomere VII to VIII is 1: 18, flagellomere VIII elongate and deeply plumose with microtrichia. Thorax. Black; scutum with recurved, white setal pile; anepisternum with broad whitish-yellow margin dorsally and posteriorly; scutellum black; coxae black; rest of legs yellow and black, femora and tibiae suffused with black with yellowish basally and apically, tarsi black, mid- and hind basitarsi white in basal half; hind tibia and tarsus longer and thicker than other legs; haltere yellow; wing slightly infuscate anteriorly, venation dark, pale anteriorly toward wing base; pterostigma light brown.

Abdomen. Male abdomen narrow, strongly petiolate basally, segments 1–2 narrower than scutellum, segments 3–5 abruptly widened and equal to width of scutum, black with yellow margin laterally; segment 1 with lateral flange well developed. Male genitalia. Epandrium similar to other species except more convex in profile; gonocoxites quadrangular with triangular posterolateral processes; gonostylus bilobed and relatively large; phallus relatively elongate and narrow with medial lobe longer and broader than lateral lobes. Female. Unknown.

Etymology. The species epithet is derived from the Latin propius —nearer, referring to the similarity to L. propinquum .

Comments. This species is very similar to L. propinquum based on the similar shape of the male genitalia. The male abdomen is strongly narrowed and petiolate basally. The scutellum of the male of L. propius sp. n. is black, while it is yellow in L. propinquum . Lagenosoma propius is known from two males from northern Queensland; the female is unknown.
