Diagnosis. Antennae relatively short, flagellomere VIII slender and not plumose; flagellomeres VI and VII each distinctly longer than lengths of flagellomeres IV and V; face rounded with black medial marking; scutellum orange; scutum orange, black anterior to transverse suture with distinct dorsocentral stripes, setal bases dark punctate; male abdomen strongly petiolate.
Description. Body length = 7.5–9.0 mm. Head. Whitish-yellow with black markings; frons rounded, female with black quadrangular shaped marking medially, reaching eye margin, male with suffuse black medial stripe; face rounded, yellow with black medial spot (square to round), overlain with sparse setal pile (elongate and black in male, short and white in female); parafacial yellow with area of silver pubescence below eye; postocular ridge carinate and yellow in both sexes (narrow in male); occiput concave, black, covered with white setal pile; antenna (length = 2.5 mm) brown to black with black setae on scape and pedicel; flagellomeres I–III with dark microtrichia, flagellomeres IV–VIII black, flagellomeres VI and VII each distinctly longer than lengths of flagellomeres IV and V, ratio of length of flagellomere VII to VIII is 1: 5.25. Thorax. Orange and black, black on scutum anterior to transverse suture, black on venter, more extensive in male and on postpronotum, whitish-yellow from postpronotal lobe, dorsally along anepisternum through wing base to hind coxa, scutum with yellow dorsocentral stripes anteriorly, orange portion slightly raised and saddle-like, with setal bases dark punctate; scutellum orange; coxae and legs orange, male hind coxa partially suffused black, hind basitarsus black in distal half, remaining tarsi white (in female); hind tibia and tarsus longer and thicker than other legs; haltere yellow; wing hyaline, venation dark; pterostigma yellowish-brown. Abdomen. Narrowed basally, female abdomen ovoid, male strongly petiolate, segment 1 equal to width of scutellum with segment 4 widest and equal to width of scutum; segment 1 with lateral flange well developed; abdomen orange, male with tergite 1 black, tergites 2–4 suffused black medially. Male genitalia. Epandrium elongate, gonocoxites relatively elongate with claw-like posterolateral processes; gonostylus bilobed; phallus relatively elongate. Female genitalia. Not dissected.
Etymology. The species epithet is derived from the Latin clitella —saddle, referring to the raised orange, saddle-like area on the posterior part of the scutum.
Comments. Lagenosoma clitellum sp. n. is known from southeast Queensland. The head markings and scutal pattern is highly distinctive and unique to this species. The dark setal base punctuation on the orange portion of the scutum is also found in the closely related L. eklemmum sp. n. and L. geminatum sp. n. These three species also share a similar apportionment of the flagellomeres IV–VIII with VI and VII longer than IV and V, and flagellomere VIII relatively short and not plumose. This species displays some sexual dimorphism, with females having the distal tarsomeres on the hind leg white, while they are black in the male.
