Remarks. We have found only one specimen of Chlaenius lineellus labeled as such ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–6 ) by Motschulsky’s hand in the collection of Victor Motschulsky (ZMU). The beetle badly suffered from skin beetle larvae in completely lacking the head, prothorax and legs, with only the mesothorax and metathorax with elytra, hindwings, and fragments of coxae and trochanters, as well as a hollow abdomen without genitalia being preserved ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–6 ). The structure and microsculpture of the anal sternite of the abdomen suggest that was a male.
Chlaenius lineellus was described without specifying the number of specimens, their sexes, and the exact places of collection ( Motschulsky 1859). Since Motschulsky’s catalog included material from the entire Amur basin, ranging from Shilka River in Transbaikalia (= Dauria) to the town of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur at the mouth of Amur River, and, geographically, Shilka River belongs to Dauria, we consider it possible to herewith designate the above specimen from “Daur. mer.” (= Dauria meridionalis) as the lectotype of Chlaenius lineellus Motschulsky, 1859 .
Comparing the above preserved fragment with species of the subgenus Chlaeniellus Reitter, 1908 from North Asia, it appears safe to say that Ch. lineellus and Ch. circumductus are one and the same species ( Figs 1, 3, 5 View FIGURES 1–6 ). Since the name by Motschulsky has time priority and it has repeatedly been mentioned in scientific literature ( Keleinikova 1976; Kirschenhofer 2003, 2017; Sundukov & Makarov 2020, etc.), according to article 23.9.1. ( ICZN 1999), Chlaenius circumductus A. Morawitz, 1862 is formally to be considered as a junior subjective synonym of Chlaenius lineellus Motschulsky, 1859 .
Sundukov and Makarov (2019) have recently shown the record of the Japanese Chlaenius (Haplochlaenius) insularis (Uéno, 1964) from Sakhalin as being erroneous. Apparently, the confusion arose from the information contained a publication on the fauna of South Sakhalin, where that Japanese species mistakenly appeared ( Vertyankin & Shabalin 2013) instead of Ch. insularis Kryzhanovskij, 1973 (= Ch. lineellus ). That was probably the reason for adding Ch. insularis (Uéno, 1964) to the fauna of Sakhalin in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera ( Kirschenhofer 2017) .
