Type species. Cicada formosa Germar, 1830 ( Brazil) .

Remarks. The genus is distributed over much of the neotropical region. Records of Carineta species are attributed to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the West Indies ( Metcalf 1963c; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2006 a, 2007a; 2007b; 2010a; 2010b; 2011a; 2011b; 2013; Sanborn et al. 2011a).
