scientific name

Vismia guineensis (L.) Choisy
status

Hypericum guineense Linnaeus View in CoL , Hypericum: 4. 1776.

"Habitat in Guinea. And. Berlin." RCN: 5742.

Lectotype (designated here by Robson): [icon] " Hypericum floribus pentagynis, subumbellatis, caule fruticoso, ramis teretibus, foliis ovatis, acutis" in Linnaeus, Hypericum : 4, f. 1. 1776. - Epitype (designated here by Robson): Sierra Leone. H. Smeathman s.n. (BM; iso- MPU).

Current name: Vismia guineensis (L.) Choisy View in CoL ( Clusiaceae ).

Note: The only original material is the figure that forms part of the protologue. Linnaeus, however, mentioned Andreas Berlin, a student of his who was latterly employed by Sir Joseph Banks, as the source of material (or possibly information). Berlin was in West Africa as an assistant to Henry Smeathman, and specimens of this species said to have been collected by the latter have been located in BM and MPU. Although it is most unlikely that they were ever seen by Linnaeus, they are chosen as epitypes.
