Japanagromyza tephrosiae (de Meijere)

Remarks. This is a leafminer of Tephrosia spp. ( Fabaceae ). The diagnostic characters of this species are given in the key. Japanagromyza badia Spencer was described by a single male from Australia (N.S.W.), based on the brown frons as a recognizable character among the Australian species, but its brownish yellow to dark ochrous fringe on the calypter should be a clear point in separating them. A male from Christmas Is. has the black frons, and characteristic genitalia as described below.

Male genitalia: epandrium with surstylus elongate, as broad as cercus, with 15–18 distal spines; cercus broad, with a row of setulae at anterior base; proctiger short; hypandrium 760 µm long, with basal apodeme 1.8 times as long as sidepiece; phallapodeme 740 µm long; phallus 740 µm long, basiphallus short, hypophallus short and weakly chitinized, distiphallus with paired narrow tubules (440 µm long), distinctly chitinized on basal quarter and membranous on distal quarter, slightly sinuate; ejaculatory podeme 340 µm long, blade narrow, almost parallel-sided, 100 µm broad (cf. Sehgal 1965: Figs. 10 ; Spencer 1977: Figs. 169– 171).
