Type material. Holotype, female ( MNHN): “Corumba \ Matt Grosso” [printed label]; “sculptipennis \ n sp” [in Pic’s hand]; “ HOLOTYPUS \ Cyphon sculptipennis \ Pic, 1931 ” [red label, printed].

Redescription. Female. Body oblong oval, convex, covered with yellowish suberect setae. Body uniformly dark brown, venter brown. Head very broad, 1.75× wider than width of interocular space, with distinct but fine punctation, punctures small, granulate, separated by ca. 2.0–3.0× diameter of a puncture, eyes moderately large, not protuberant. Pronotum transverse, widest at its base. Disc of pronotum with fine, granulate punctation, punctures separated by 1.5–2.0× diameter of a puncture. Posterior margin of pronotum subtly bisinuate. Anterior angles protruding anteriorly, subtriangular, posterior angles obtuse. Scutellar shield subtriangular, with very fine, granulate punctation. Angle between pronotum and elytra subtly marked in dorsal outline. Elytra oblong, without traces of longitudinal ridges, broadest in the middle of their length. Sides slightly curved in apical 1/2, regularly converging to apex in posterior 1/3. Humeri well marked. Punctation stronger than on pronotum, punctures elongate, distance between punctures ca. 0.7–1.0× diameter of a puncture. Apical portion of elytra depressed in adsutural portion, with two deep cavities on each elytron ( Figs 7 View FIGURE 7 C–D). Sternite VIII elongate, Y-shaped, with single apodeme. Remaining structures of genital tract missing in the studied specimen.

Male. Unknown.

Measurements and ratios. Female (n = 1) TL 2.83 mm, PL 0.57 mm, PW 1.23 mm, EL 2.34 mm, EW 1.83 mm, TL/EW 1.55, PW/PL 2.16, EL/EW 1.28, EL/PL 4.11.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality in Brazil, close to the border with Bolivia, in the Pantanal wetland.

Remarks. Presence of well developed, foveate excitators in apical portions of elytra, and TL larger than 2.4 mm support inclusion of this species in the group I of Calvariopsis gen. nov.
