( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 E–G, 13)
Type material. Holotype, male ( MNHN): “Callanga \ Perou” [green label, handwritten] . Paratypes. 9 males ( MNHN): same data as holotype. Male ( SEMC): “ PERU: Dept. Cusco: \ Cock of the Rock Lodge, \ NE Paucar- tambo 13°03.3’S \ 71°32.7’W 1120m \ 4–9-XI-2007 D. Brzoska \ ex flight intercept trap \ PER1B07 001”. Male ( SEMC): “ PERU: Jauja Prov. \ Junín Dept., Sani \ Beni, 840m. \ 1–5 November 1935 \ Felix Woytkowski” .
Diagnosis. Extremely variable species of moderate size (TL 2.5–3.2 mm), externally resembling C. picta sp. nov. Identifiable on the basis of male genital characters: penis very long and narrow.Apical plate of tergite VIII with distinct M-shaped notch in median portion, flanked with two deep, semicircular emarginations.
Description. Holotype, male. Body oval, convex, covered with brown, suberect setae. Head, pronotum, scutellar shield and venter dark brown, elytra brown, each elytron with three orange maculae: oval macula in humeral portion of each elytron, transverse macula in middle portion of elytra and orange adsutural macula in apical part of elytra, legs, antennae, and mouthparts yellowish-brown. Head very broad, 1.7× wider than width of interocular space, with subtle punctation, punctures small, granulate, separated by a 3.0–4.0× diameter of a puncture, eyes moderately large, not protuberant. Pronotum transverse, widest at its base. Disc of pronotum with fine, granulate punctation, punctures separated by ca. 2.0–3.0× diameter of a puncture. Posterior margin of pronotum subtly bisinuate. Anterior angles protruding anteriorly, subtriangular, posterior angles obtuse. Scutellar shield subtriangular, covered with subtle punctation. Elytra oblong, without traces of longitudinal ridges, widest in middle of their length, sides curved, regularly converging to apex in posterior 1/3. Humeri well marked. Punctation stronger than on pronotum, punctures elongate, distance between punctures ca. 0.5–1.0× diameter of a puncture.
Male genitalia. Penis (L 1.05 mm, W 0.12 mm, Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 A–B) very long and narrow, widened in basal portion, parameroids short, narrow, rounded at apices, curved, trigonium subtriangular, narrow, pointed at apex, curved in lateral view. Tegmen (L 0.80 mm, W 0.21 mm, Fig. 13C View FIGURE 13 ) very long, sides subparallel, apex with short lateral lobes, covered with setae. Sternite IX (L 0.32 mm, W 0.25 mm, Fig. 13D View FIGURE 13 ) subrectangular, with paired apodemes, apical margin rounded, apical portion covered with short, sparse setae. Tergite VIII (L 0.44 mm, W 0.36 mm, Fig. 13E View FIGURE 13 ) with short apical plate, central portion of apical margin with two oval emarginations and two short denticles forming M-shaped structure, apical margin subtly setose, apodemes distinctly longer than apical plate, diverging. Tergite IX (L 0.43 mm, W 0.29 mm, Fig. 13F View FIGURE 13 ) with membranous apical plate, apodemes longer than apical plate.
Variability. Colouration of body variable, from uniformly orange to completely black. The following colour patterns were observed:
- head light brown, pronotum, scutellar shield and elytra orange;
- head, pronotum, and scutellar shield brownish-black, elytra orange with transverse black stripe in posterior half (Dept. Cusco, Callanga);
- as above, but whole apices of elytra black (Callanga);
- head and pronotum light brown, scutellar shield orange, elytra orange with indistinct brown pattern consisting of three elongate maculae in anterior portion of each elytron (Callanga);
- head light brown, pronotum light brown with black central portion, elytra orange with arcuate black stripe in basal portion and transverse black stripe in posterior portion (Callanga);
- head, pronotum, and scutellar shield dark brown, elytra brown with two oval orange maculae in humeral portions, transverse orange maculae in the middle of elytra, and orange adsutural macula in apical part of each elytron (Callanga);
- whole dorsum dark brown, except apices of elytra which are orange (Dept. Junín);
- whole dorsum blackish (Callanga).
Female. Unknown.
Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 10) TL 2.50–3.20 (2.86) mm, PL 0.47–0.67 (0.58) mm, PW 1.13–1.43 (1.32) mm, EL 2.23–2.63 (2.46) mm, EW 1.63–2.07 (1.85) mm, TL/EW 1.50–1.66 (1.55), PW/PL 2.15–2.47 (2.27), EL/EW 1.27–1.40 (1.34), EL/PL 3.80–4.79 (4.25).
Distribution. Known from three quite distant (located 300–500 km from each other) localities in Peru.
Etymology. Named after Peru, where the type locality of the species is located.
