NOTES: G. Lister (1913a: 3) wrote, in the description of the species, “On moss and liverworts on dead wood. Norway,
Jura Mountains, Japan …” and added “We have three gatherings of this species. It was found first by the late Prof. Axel
Blytt near Christiania, Norway, in September, 1879. A small specimen was sent to my father for determination …”
[this specimen was published and illustrated (fig. 131i) in the British Museum Catalogue, ed. 2. “The second gathering was made by M. Ch. Meylan on the Chasseron, in the Jura Mountains, at an altitude of over 4000 ft., in July, 1910. He kindly sent me a group of five or six sporangia…”. “For the third gathering we are indebted to Mr. K, Minakata, who found it on Ando Mountain, in the province of Kii, Japan, in November, 1910. It consists of about thirty somewhat weathered and mouldy sporangia …”. In BM there are two boxes labelled “Type specimen”, one is Meylan’s material (BM 3527), and the other Minakata’s (K.M. 322). There are two Minakata slides, one with no number but the same date “11.1910” and place, and another numbered (KM. 322) and dated “9.12.12” with reference to notebook XXXI: 114. The difference in the dates could be because the second slide bears the date it was made, not the specimen collection date, and it has on it “Fragment of waxy collar heated till melted, & stained with Alkannin tincture”. We only found a slide from the Norwegian collection (Christiania K & Bl. 66A). We chose the Japanese specimen (K.M. 322) as the lectotype as it was in the best condition, had abundant notes and illustrations referring to it in notebook XXXI: 113–118 and is used in the illustration of the species Tab. 525. Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 . Tab. 525. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the Norwegian and Jura Mountains specimens respectively.
