NOTES: Lister (1891: 268) wrote that this species was found “In considerable abundance on decayed elm–log. Hitchin,

March, 1889, and Jan. 1890; gathered also by A. Camm near Birmingham, Oct. 1889 ”. In BM there are 6 boxes and 4

slides of original material. BM 1483 is labelled “ Type specimen” and has a barcode, but a different specimen (BM 299)

has been selected as the lectotype because it was collected by Gulielma Lister , the date is earlier, it matches data in the publication, and it is in very good condition. We consider BM 1483 to be a syntype BM 298 , BM 301 (with a fragment of a different sample “ Sandall Beat Wood, Doncaster 23.9.14 XXXIV.162”), BM 302 (with a fragment from a different date “Ap.18.92”) and BM 303 are also syntypes. Slide ( L: B. M.146) could be of the lectotype, as it was collected by

Lister in March 1889, but there is some doubt so we have decided to leave it as a syntype. Lister himself proposed the current name of the taxon Hemitrichia intorta (Lister) Lister in the first edition of the monograph ( Lister 1894) , and the generic name Hemitrichia was approved as a nomina conservanda ( Lado et al. 2005, Gams 2005).
