Lister, in leaf litter on winged fruits of Carpinus betulus L./ BM001089721 [On the sheet label: “BM 2555/ Stemonitis herbatica Peck / var. confluens / Among Hornbeam leaves, Epping Forest, July 21.1894/ From white plasmodium; leg. A. & G. Lister/ (First described as S. fusca v. confluens , Mycetozoa Ed. 1.p 111/ Pl.lxxvii A”. There is a handwritten label: “ Symphytocarpus herbaticus B. Ing / nov. spec. Type./ See Koninkl. Nederl. Akad./ Wetensch., Ser. C, 70, 229, 1967”].

NOTES: Lister (1911: 148) referred to “Epping Forest (BM 2555); Ceylon (BM 2556); Connecticut (BM 2557)”.

In BM a box was located, BM 2555, that was chosen by Ing in Ing & Nannenga-Bremekamp (1967: 229) as the

[lecto] type. No slides located and no notes. The two other samples referred to by G. Lister from Ceylon and Conecticut were not located. The var. confluens , with “sporangia united to form a convolute aethalioid mass, with somewhat persistent sporangium-walls, without distinct stalks or columellae; capillitium an irregular network without surface net” (Lister 1911), is currently considered to be within the genus Symphytocarpus and a homotypic synonym of the species Symphytocarpus herbaticus Ing.
