3. Weissia breutelii Müll.Hal., Syn. Musc. Frond. 1: 664. 1849 ( Müller 1849).

Type:—INSULA ANTILLARUM. St. Tomas : 1841, Breutel s.n. (isotypes MO, NY!) .

= Weissia canaliculata Hampe, Vidensk. Medd. Dansk Naturh. For. KjØbenhavn 1: 85. 1879 ( Hampe 1879), syn. nov.

Type:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Glaziou 7300 (holotype NY!, isotypes PC!) .

= Weissia glaziouii R.H.Zander, Bull. Buffalo Soc. Nat. Sc. 32: 184. 1993 ( Zander 1993), syn. nov. Type:— BRAZIL. São Paulo: Apiaí, Puiggari s.n.; Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Glaziou 9257, 9264 (syntypes BM!, PC!). ≡ Hymenostomum striatum Geh. et Hampe, Vid. Medd. Naturh. For. Kjoebenh. Ser. View in CoL 4, 1: 84. 1879 ( Hampe 1879).

Note:— Weissia breutelii occurs in tropical America ( Zander 1993), and in Brazil in the Atlantic rainforest (semideciduous forest and ombrophilous dense forest) and Savanna; on soil or rock, 0— 900 m. According to Hampe (1879) Hymenostomum striatum View in CoL is very similar to Weissia canaliculata by the capsule gymnostomous and angled-striate. The collection of W. canaliculata housed at NY herbarium presents an annotation label of R. Zander with the following observation: “near Weissia breutelii and we here are reducing it to synonymy”. However such synonymy was not published and both taxa are here being synonymized with W. breutelii .

Weissia breutelii has the same aspect, size, and leaf shape of W. controversa Hedwig (1801:67) but differs from the other two Brazilian species of Weissia View in CoL ( W. controversa Hedwig (1801:67) and W. jamaicensis (Mitten) Grout (1938:157) in having mid leaf cells bulging-mammilose on the ventral surface and smooth on the dorsal surface. The same was already observed by Allen (2002) to this species from Central America.
