Anagyrus bifasciatus ( Brèthes, 1913)

( Figs 5–12)

Paranusia bifasciata Brèthes 1913: 101 (illustration of female), 102. Type locality: General Urquiza (Villa Urquiza), Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina ( De Santis 1950: 61; De Santis 1964: 80). Subsequent references: De Santis 1950: 54 (mentioned), 60–61 (type information); De Santis 1964: 79 –80 (redescription, illustration of male antenna, host associations, type information); De Santis 1967: 151 (catalog); Kerrich 1982: 401 (list); Loiácono et al. 2001: 156 (type information).

Philoponectroma pectinatum Brèthes 1913: 104 (illustration of male), 105. Type locality: General Urquiza (Villa Urquiza), Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina ( De Santis 1950: 61). Effectively synomymized under P. bifasciata by De Santis 1950: 61 and listed as a synonym of P. bifasciata by De Santis 1964: 79.

Anagyrus bifasciatus (Brèthes) : Noyes 1980: 173; Noyes 2000: 42 (mentioned).

Type material examined. Lectotype female [ MACN] of Paranusia bifasciata Brèthes , here designated to avoid any possible confusion regarding the status of the type specimens of this taxon, on slide ( Fig. 5) labeled: 1. “ MUSEO ARG. C. NATURALES Sección ENTOMOLOGIA ARGENTINA Capital Federal III- 1912 s./ Dactylopius N°. 421 ”; 2. “ Paranusia bifasciata Brèthes Gral Urquiza iii. 1912 COTYPUS [red]”; 3. [type number] “P 9 ”. The lectotype ( Fig. 6) is almost complete (missing a tarsus of one middle leg) and mounted laterally, with gaster detached from the body, mounted under the same coverslip with a conspecific female paralectotype; it agrees in all regards with the original description and the illustration of the female of this species in Brèthes (1913).

Paralectotypes of P. bifasciata (6 ♀). The above mentioned 1 ♀ [ MACN]; 2 ♀ [ MACN] on slide labeled similarly to the lectotype slide except for the number “N° 422 ” and the type number “P 10 ”; 1 ♀ ( Fig. 8) [ MACN] on point labeled: 1. “G al Urquiza III. 912 J. B.”; 2. “ Paranusia bifasciata Br. ” (the specimen is in fair condition, almost complete); 1 ♀ [ MACN] on point labeled: 1. “Bs Aires iii. 912 J. B.”; 2. “ Paranusia bifasciata Brèthes ”; 3. “ Encyrtidae ” (the specimen is in a relatively good condition but lacking some appendages); 1 ♀ [ MLPA] (listed by Loiácono et al. (2001) as a syntype) on slide labeled: 1. “GENERAL URQUIZA (Buenos Aires) sintipo ♀ Col. Brethes III/ 1912 ”; 2. “ Paranusia bifasciata Det. Brethes COTIPO [crossed out] 1984 / 1 [ MLPA type number added later] MUSEO DE LA PLATA ” (the specimen is incomplete and dissected into many parts under the same coverslip: head, both antennae and fore wings, most of legs except for one hind leg, and two mesosomal parts).

Lectotype male [ MACN] of Philoponectroma pectinatum Brèthes , here designated to avoid any possible confusion regarding the status of the type specimens of this taxon, on slide ( Fig. 10) labeled: 1. “ MUSEO ARG. C. NATURALES Sección ENTOMOLOGIA ARGENTINA Cap. Federal. - III- 912 s/ Dactylopius sp. en Franciscea eximia . - N°. 423 ”; 2. “ Philoponectroma pectinatum Brèthes Gral Urquiza iii. 1912 COTYPUS [red]”; 3. [type number] “P 29 ”. This specimen ( Figs 11, 12) was mentioned by De Santis (1950: 60) as a syntype of P. pectinatum ; it is in a more or less fair condition although lacking a few appendages, with the head plus one antenna detached from the body ( Fig. 11).

2 ♂ paralectotypes of P. pectinatum [ MACN]: 1 ♂ on point labeled: 1. “B Aires III. 912 J. B.”; 2. “ Encyrtidae ” (the specimen is in poor condition, incomplete); and 1 ♂ on slide labeled: 1. “ Philoponectroma pectinatum Brèthes 415 ”; 2. [type number] “P 30 ”.

Distribution. Argentina: Autonomous City of Buenos Aires ( Brèthes 1913; De Santis 1964, 1967).

Hosts. Dactylopius sp. ( Hemiptera : Dactylopiidae ) and Eriococcus brasiliensis Cockerell ( Hemiptera : Eriococcidae ) ( Brèthes 1913; De Santis 1964).

Taxonomic notes. Paranusia bifasciata was described from an unspecified number of females whereas P. pectinatum was described from an unspecified number of males ( Brèthes 1913). De Santis (1950, 1964) provided information on the surviving syntypes of both nominal species.

The scape of the female antenna ( Fig. 7) is broad (about 3.0× as long as wide), and F 6 and the clava are white. The fore wing of the female ( Figs 6, 8, 9) has two rather narrow, more or less transverse, dark bands on the disc, with the basal one behind the submarginal vein and the apical one behind the marginal and stigmal veins. The fore wing disc of the male is hyaline ( Fig. 12).
