Centris (Melanocentris) xanthocnemis ( Perty, 1833) View in CoL

Xylocopa xanthocnemis Perty, 1833 View in CoL . 150.

Type data: It is not clear from the original description how many specimens were used to describe this bee. In 1901, Friese considered a male studied by Perty (1833) housed at ZSM as the “type” of this species and according to the Article 74.6 of the ICZN code, this interpretation can be considered a valid lectotype designation. Moure (1960b) did something similar, citing that he studied the “ holotype ” of this species, assuming that it was described based on a single male exemplar. The specimen studied by these authors has the following data label: [green label] Piauchy. Brasilien Coll. Perty [handwritten]\ [square label with green margin] 5. Bres. Piauchy X. xanthocnemis Pty [handwritten]\ [pink label] Lectotypus Xylocopa xanthocnemis Perty ♀ Diller 1989 [handwritten] Zoologische Staatssam- mlg. München [printed] ( ZSM). Subsequent designation: Friese (1901).

Type locality: Brazil: Piauí state .

Centris pulverata Lepeletier, 1841 View in CoL . 161, 162.

Type data: Lepeletier (1841) described this species based on an undetermined number of females collected in São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. Moure (1960b) studied a female housed at MHNP that agrees with the original description assuming that it was the holotype. This can be treated as a valid lectotype designation. The specimen he studied has the following data label: pulverata [handwritten]\ [circular label] du nord de la Capite de St Paul [handwritten]\ [red label] Holotype [handwritten]\ Museum Paris nord de la Capit. de St Paul [printed]\ 22 [handwritten]\ Type Lepelletier [handwritten]\ Centris xanthocnemis Perty ♀ m. typ. verglichen! [handwritten] det. Friese 1898 [printed] ( MNHP).

Type locality: Brazil: São Paulo state .

Comments: Friese (1901) cited C. pulverata in the synonymy of C. xanthocnemis and Moure proposed the same synonymy in 1960b. The type specimens of both species are in good condition.

Centris xanthocnemis has been recorded in Bolivia and in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Piauí and São Paulo ( Moure et al., 2007).
