DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Palau and New Guinea, south to Solomon Islands. Found in aggregations in sheltered coastal reefs and lagoon habitats, 0– 6 m. Marine.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line and Gambier islands, north to Izu Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga. Found in shallow lagoon and seaward coral reefs exposed to mild or moderate surge; juveniles on the shore or in tidal pools, 0– 3 m. Marine.

Found on steep slopes of seaward coral reefs, 3– 45 m. Marine.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Cocos-Keeling and Christmas islands (eastern Indian Ocean) east to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia. Found in lagoons, passes and slopes of seaward coral reefs, among branches of staghorn Acropora corals, 1– 15 m. Marine.

Amphiprion chrysopterus Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1830 —Orangefin anemonefish STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Allen (1975a: 334); specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 0 2, CTR 30, CTR 31. AMS material. A hybrid between A. chrysopterus and A. sandaracinos was described as Amphiprion leucokranos from Madang by Allen (1973a: 319, figs. 1, 2a, 3); it was observed at St. CTR 0 1, and photographed by P. Laboute [CAS and USNM material].

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia east to Caroline and Tuamotu islands, north to Philippines, south to New Caledonia. Found in lagoons and on seaward reef slopes, commensal with sea anemones, 1– 30 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Allen (1975a: 293). Specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 6, CTR 0 8, CTR 19, CTR 27, CTR 28, and by Tan H. H. at St. PR 0 1 (5 Nov. 2012), PR 20 (12 Nov. 2012). AMS material. Hybridises with Amphiprion chrysopterus (see above).

Found above steep outer coral or rocky reef slopes and shallow coastal reef flats, sometimes forming large aggregations feeding on zooplankton several metres above the bottom, 3– 40 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus nagasakiensis Tanaka, 1917 —Nagasaki damselfish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed at St. CTR 05; a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen. NTUM material (NTUM 10284, 10285).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Maldives and Sri Lanka east to Palau and Vanuatu, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found on sandy areas near rocky outcrops, 3– 35 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus nigromanus Weber, 1913 —Goldback damselfish ( Fig. 17 )

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed, photographed and collected at St. CTR 0 3, CTR 0 5, CTR 0 8, CTR 17, CTR 18, CTR 19, CTR 27; a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen in Madang Bay. MNHN, NTUM and WAM material (MNHN uncat.; NTUM 10193; WAM P.29624-096)

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia east to Palau and Solomon Islands, south to northwestern Australia, New Caledonia and Loyalty Islands. Found in fringing, lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 6– 60 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus nigromarginatus Allen, 1973 —Black-margined damselfish

STATUS AT MADANG. Originally described from Madang by Allen (1973b: 38, fig. 3); photographed by A. Berberian. USNM and WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South China Sea north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia. Among corals or rocks at outer reef slopes, 20– 50 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus pavo (Bloch, 1787) —Blue damselfish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Kailola (1975: 176). Specimens observed, photographed and collected at St. CTR 23, CTR 25, CTR 26; a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen in Madang Bay. AMS, KFRS, NTUM and USNM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Line, Society and Tuamotu islands, north to Taiwan, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Found in sheltered coastal and lagoon reefs, 1– 16 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus philippinus Evermann & Seale, 1907 — Philippines damselfish STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 3, CTR 16, CTR 16B, CTR 22.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Maldives and Andaman Sea east to Philippines and Solomon Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in coastal and seaward reefs, 1– 12 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus reidi Fowler & Bean, 1928 —Reid's damselfish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Allen (1975b: 225). Specimens observed, photographed and collected at St. CTR 19, CTR 28. LACM, USNM and WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia east to Palau and Vanuatu, north to Philippines, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in deep lagoon reefs and on seaward reef slopes, 3– 70 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus simsiang Bleeker, 1856 —Moluccan damselfish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 319). Specimens photographed at St. CTR 11, CTR 17. AMS, CAS and USNM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Caroline Islands and Vanuatu, north to Philippines, south to New Caledonia. Found on silty shorelines and in lagoon reefs, 0– 10 m. Marine.

Pomacentrus tripunctatus Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1830 —Threespot damselfish STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Kailola (1975: 176). AMS, CAS and KFRS material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. India and Sri Lanka east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Yaeyama Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in groups, in rocky reefs near the shore, 0– 3 m. Transitional water and marine.

Pomacentrus vaiuli Jordan & Seale, 1906 —Princess damselfish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Kailola (1987b: 355); specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 0 2, CTR 0 3, CTR 0 4, CTR 0 5, CTR 0 6, CTR 0 7, CTR 0 8, CTR 0 9, CTR 11, CTR 12, CTR 14, CTR 15, CTR 17, CTR 22, CTR 25. USNM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Caroline Islands and Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary or in groups, in lagoon reefs or slopes of seaward reefs, 1– 45 m. Marine.

Premnas biaculeatus (Bloch, 1790) —Spinecheek anemonefish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Allen (1975a: 300); specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 11, CTR 17, CTR 23, CTR 26, CTR 36. AMS, CAS and USNM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Andaman Sea and Indonesia east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Sabah ( Malaysia), south to Queensland ( Australia). Commensal with sea anemones ( Entacmaea quadricolor ), 1– 18 m. Marine.

Stegastes albifasciatus (Schlegel & Müller, 1839) —Whitebar gregory

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Allen & Emery (1985: 2). Specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 8, CTR 11, CTR 14, CTR 25. AMS, ROM and WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Aldabra and Mascarenes (western Indian Ocean) east to Wake, Line and Tuamotu islands, north to Ryukyu islands, south to Western Australia, New Caledonia and Tonga. Found on reef flats, in shallow lagoons, and on semi-sheltered coral or rocky reef margins; common among patches of rubble or porous reef rock, surrounded by live coral, particularly in areas of mild surge, 0– 4 m. Marine.

Stegastes fasciolatus (Ogilby, 1889) —Pacific gregory

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and collected at St. CTR 0 2, CTR 0 6, CTR 0 7, CTR 0 8, CTR 15, CTR 17, CTR 22, CTR 23. AMS and MNHN material (AMS I.17090-052; MNHN uncat.).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Hawaiian Islands and Easter Island, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern New Zealand. Found in inshore rocky and coral reefs, exposed to surge, 0– 5 m. Marine.

Stegastes nigricans (Lacepède [ex Commerson ], 1802) —Dusky gregory

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 0 2, CTR 0 3, CTR 0 8, CTR 11, CTR 14, CTR 15, CTR 16, CTR 17, CTR 23, CTR 26. AMS and USNM material (AMS I.16688-001, I.17082-020, I.17083-011, I.17088-035; USNM 281082, 363391).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Tuamotu Archipelago, north to Wake Atoll, south to Western Australia, New Caledonia and Tonga. Found on reef flats and lagoon reefs, frequently occurring in groups associated with live or dead branching staghorn coral ( Acropora ), 0– 12 m. Marine.

Stegastes punctatus (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) —Bluntsnout gregory

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed at St. CTR 0 2, CTR 11, CTR 14, CTR 15, CTR 17, CTR 23, CTR 25, CTR 27. Previously reported as Stegastes lividus (non Forster in Bloch & Schneider, 1801) by Allen (1975b: 141).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Tuamotu Archipelago, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New Caledonia and Tonga. Found in coral reef areas with dead staghorn corals, 0– 5 m. Marine.
