DISTRIBUTION: S.E. Utah, W. Colorado, extreme S.E. Wyoming, W. and C. New Mexico, and Arizona ( U.S.A.); Chihuahua, Durango, and Sonora (N.W. Mexico).
COMMENT: Subgenus Otosciurus ; see Hall, 1981:434. Moore, 1959, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 118:153-206, included Otosciurus in subgenus Sciurus . Includes kaibabensis ; see Hoffmeister and Diersing, 1978, J. Mammal., 59:402. Reviewed by Nash and Seaman, 1977, Mamm. Species, 80:1-5.
