TYPE LOCALITY: U.S.A., Washington, Walla Walla Co., near Wallula .
DISTRIBUTION: Great Basin region of E. Washington, Oregon, S. Idaho, E. California, Nevada, and W. Utah ( U.S.A.).
COMMENT: Subgenus Spermophilus ; see Hall, 1981:382. Includes several chromosomally different groups (mollis, vigilis) that may be distinct species; see Vorontsov and Lyapunova, 1970, Byull. Mosk. Ova. Ispyt. Prir. Otd. Biol., 75: 122-136.
