Diagnosis. Parafacials dull brownish grey in anterodorsal view. Thorax and abdomen with brownish grey pruinosity; female mesonotum with four distinct dark stripes in posterior view; male abdomen uniformly light brownish grey pruinose without traces of a median dark stripe; female abdomen grey pruinose with fine dark reflections and a distinct median dark stripe reaching hind margin of tergite IV. Male wing and calypteres with more or less distinct brown clouding. Halter yellow. Legs brownish black with ochre brown to pale ochre yellow tibiae. Male eye with long, moderately dense brownish pile; female eye with distinct but very short pile. Male head in profile with middle part of parafacial concealed behind the eye. Distance between rows of fine presutural acrostichal setae almost twice their distance to adjacent dorsocentral rows; setulae between acrostichal rows arranged in three or four irregular rows. Vein C bare on dorsal surface. Hind tibia with 1‒2 av setae. Male sternite V, surstylus and cerci ( Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 A‒D) not clearly different from those parts in H. umbratica ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 A‒D). Ovipositor of the Hebecnema umbratica type ( Figs 8A, B View FIGURE 8 ).

Remarks. The present species belongs to the Hebecnema umbratica species group. It is evidently very closely related to H. umbratica as judged from the practically identical male and female terminalia. It is on average larger, with a wing length reaching 6.3 mm and readily recognized in both sexes by colour differences. Medium to large individuals of both sexes frequently with a few setulae on sternite I; this I have elsewhere only seen in one exceptionally large individual of H. umbratica .

Macaronesian distribution. Canary Islands: Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, Hierro, La Palma ; Madeira; Azores.
