Taxonomic note
This species was formerly included within M. schreibersii Kuhl, 1819 including by Francis et al. (1999) and Francis (2008), but analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences indicate the species in SE Asia is quite distinct from that in Europe ( Tian et al., 2004), and M. fuliginosus appears to be the most appropriate name for the form in Lao PDR.
