Exorista susurrans Rondani, 1859 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1859b: 117 (key), 129 (description) (as “ sussurrans ”).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus ditionis parmensis [ Parmese hills ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 6 ♀♀, syntypes (one missing right fore-leg; two missing mid-legs; one very dirty, missing left foreleg; one missing abdomen) ( MZUF: Box 13): Exorista Mgn / sussurrans Rnd. / 626; 1 ♀, syntype (missing fore-legs) ( MZUF: Box E): Exorista sussurrans R., 221, ♀, Parma / 393 221.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Senometopia susurrans ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 219, Pape et al. 1995: 21, Cerretti 2010: 224, O’Hara et al. 2020: 356).
REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 129) described Exorista susurrans from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, despite there being seven specimens in the type series found in this study: “ Paucae foeminae tantum captae [Collected a few females only]”. Rondani (1859b: 129) used the spelling “ sussurrans ” for the nominal species. Bezzi & Stein (1907: 246), Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 219), O’Hara et al. (2009: 81, 2020: 358) used the spelling “ susurrans ”. Brauer & Bergenstamm (1891: 320) and O’Hara et al. (2011: 214) used the original spelling “ sussurrans ”. O’Hara et al. (2009: 81) stated that the spelling “ susurrans ” was in prevailing usage and it to be used in accordance with I.C.Z.N. (1999: Article 33.2.3.1). We found seven female syntypes in this study. Two MZUF males numbered “626” and one MSNC male are not included in the type series because of their sex.
