Merodon sicanus Rondani, 1845 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1845f: 258 (key), 264 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Sicilia [Sicily ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study. See Remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Merodon pruni ( Rossi, 1790) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 172, Hurkmans 1993: 185, Belcari et al. 1995a: 16).
REMARKS: Rondani (1845f: 264) described Merodon sicanus from just two female specimens: “ specie formata sopra due individui di sesso femminile [species described from two female specimens]” from material received from M. Spinola. We could not locate any type specimens during this study. Not included in the type series are four MZUF specimens: one MZUF male because of its sex, two MZUF females numbered “69” from “Parma” one MSNC female from “Apenn. [= Apennines]” because they are not the type locality. Hurkmans (1993: 185) incorrectly designated one of the two females in the MZUF as lectotype.
