The composition of this family is under debate. Alexander & Byers (1981) and Marshall (2012) considered some of these flies as Limoniinae , a tipulid subfamily, while Savchenko et al. (1992), Oosterbroek & Starý (1995), Oosterbroek (2020) and Pape et al. (2011) separated Limoniidae from Tipulidae . This worldwide family, sensu stricto, contains more than 4,400 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1842a, 1850 c, 1856, 1863, 1875c) described two Palaearctic, two Neotropical, one Oriental and one Afrotropical nominal species, all considered as valid except for one, which is doubtful ( Alexander & Alexander 1970, 1973, Hutson 1980, Oosterbroek & Theowald 1992, Oosterbroek & Starý 1995). Rondani did not cover this family in his Prodromus . Except for the type material of Tipula marmoripennis , which is presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUF (three), MRSN (one), MZUN (one), MSNG (one) and OUMNH (one).
