Mesostenus denticulatus Taschenberg, 1876:93 . ♀ Description.
Mesostenus denticulatus: Sauer, 1946:9 . Host record.
Digonocryptus denticulatus: Townes and Townes, 1966:126 View in CoL . Generic transfer.
Digonocryptus denticulatus: Yu and Horstmann, 1998:241 View in CoL . Listed.
Description. FEMALE. Fore wing 11.1 mm.
Head. Ventral tooth of mandible slightly longer than dorsal tooth. Clypeus apical area delimited by smooth border; clypeal margin with one tooth ( Fig. 128). Antenna with 24 flagellomeres; white band starting at flagellomere V; 6 flagellomeres at least 50% white.
Mesosoma . Mesopleuron with fine pilosity, 99% of cuticular surface visible, finely strigate, coarser towards dorsal apex. Subalar prominence oval elongate, not keeled. Sternaulus very deep, crenulated. Sulcus between sternaulus and scrobe weak. Posterior transverse carina of mesosternum imperfectly developed medially (as a wrinkle). Lower metapleuron densely pilose and entirely strigate-rugulose. Propodeum: area in front of carina with anterior margin smooth, polished, otherwise with some transverse rugulosity and sparse, pilosity-related foveolae, medially without ridges extending from carina towards anterior margin; area behind carina densely pilose, hairs longer than on metapleuron. Propodeal apophyses present as short scale-like structures, continuous with complete and well developed posterior transverse carina. Area between anterior and posterior transverse carinae obliquely rugulose; area behind posterior carina transversely rugulose. Fore wing in Fig. 188; vein 3-Cu 1.49 length of 4-Cu. Hind wing in Fig. 228.
Metasoma. Postpetiole medio-anteriorly with weak but distinct suboval concavity; dorsolateral carina partially distinct, median dorsal carina absent; petiolar spiracles in dorsal view not prominent. Ovipositor 1.46 length of hind tibia. Apex of lower valve with 11 teeth.
Color. Head and mesosoma main color black, both widely covered by pale yellow areas; metasoma mostly orange. Lateral pattern as in Fig. 75. Orbital band not interrupted; width on supra-antennal area and temple about 0.2 of interocular distance, extending over entire width of gena at ventral 0.4, dorsally tapering ( Fig. 75). Base of mandible yellow. Clypeus apical area and around tentorial pit, black; main area of clypeus, clypeal sulcus and entire supraclypeal area yellow. Mesosoma as in Fig. 75; mesepimeron entirely yellow, but mostly hidden by dense pilosity; speculum entirely black; metapleuron yellow area restricted to dorsal half. Pronotum dorsally along anterior margin, almost reaching apex of lateral corner, with wide yellow stripe from side to side, not dorsally interrupted; laterally on dorsal margin with elongate yellow spot. Propleuron postero-lateral margin yellow. Mesoscutum centrally, at level of tegula, with large yellow spot. Scutellum and postscutellum entirely yellow. Propodeum as in Figs 75–76, fully black. Fore coxa and trochanter pale yellow with small brown streak; mid coxa pale yellow except mesally mostly brown; hind coxa, trochanter and trochantellus light orange, coxa with small dorso-basal yellow spot; fore and mid femora brownish; hind femur basal 0.6 light orange, gradually changing to apically brown; fore tibia yellow, mid and hind tibia deep yellow; fore and mid tarsi gradually changing from t1 basally brownish yellow to t5 brown; hind t1–4 deep yellow, t5 brown. Metasoma: T1 basally and widely on apical margin, yellow, centrally black; T 2 in dorsal view basally darkened, T2 otherwise and all of T3–8 orange.
Morphological variation. Fore wing 7.2–14.7 mm. Ovipositor 1.17–1.50 length of hind tibia. Antenna with 25 flagellomeres, white band with 5 or 7, starting at flagellomere VI. Propodeal sculpturing behind posterior transverse carina normally finely, irregularly rugulose. Color: head and mesosoma with pale yellow instead of yellow; hind femur with dark brown restricted to apical 0.1–0.4.
MALE. Very similar to female, except as follows. Antenna with 27–28 flagellomeres; white band with 6, starting at apical half of flagellomere X; smallest specimens with white band covering only 4 flagellomeres, starting at flagellomere XI. Propodeal sculpturing behind posterior transverse carina finely, irregularly rugulose. Color: fore and mid femora color much lighter than on female; sometimes hind tibia apex and respective t1 at basal 0.1–0.9 darkened, hind t5 at basal 0.3–0.5 often yellow.
Host. Anisopodus curvilineatus White ( Coleoptera , Cerambycidae ) ( Sauer 1946).
Comments. Very similar to species in the D. diversicolor complex, from all of which it can be immediately isolated by having the meso- and metapleuron with a large yellow spot (vs. entirely black). Another similar species, D. sautatus , has mesopleuron with a yellow spot but metapleuron entirely black. Also, D. sautatus is known only from Colombia and D. denticulatus seems to occur only in southeastern and southern Brazil.
