Remarks
Physocypria nipponica is very similar to Physocypria kraepelini G. W. Müller, 1903 , the latter of which is widely distributed in Europe and Asia. Compared with Ph. kraepelini , Ph. nipponica has a stouter and thicker a lobe, proportionally shorter b lobe and more rounded outer edge of the Hp (the latter of which is quite angular in Ph. kraepelini ), and slightly differently shaped male L5 palps. However, these differences are relatively minor, and the morphology of the male L 5 in particular is noted to show considerable variation in Ph. kraepelini ( Meisch, 2000) . It is therefore possible that Ph. nipponica is a junior synonym of Ph. kraepelini , but further investigation is required to confirm this.
This species is widespread in Japan, typically found in rice fields ( Okubo 1990). In Lake Biwa it was found at 22 sites, mostly in the southern basin. Localities 35, 36, 69, 75–84, 86, 88 and 91–97 in Figure 1 View Figure 1 .
