Remarks

A small number of female specimens were recovered from the Karasuma Peninsula (locality 81 in Figure 1 View Figure 1 ). With three setae in the setal group of the second segment of the mandibular palp, this species belongs to the rostrata group of Pseudocandona . Without males, the identification of this species remains tentative because several species in this group have similar female carapace shapes [e.g. Pseudocandona marchica (Hartwig, 1899) , Pseudocandona rostrata (Brady and Norman, 1889) and Pseudocandona hartwigi (G. W. Müller, 1900) ]. However, the size and shape of the carapace, the proportions of the caudal ramus and the relatively long length of the antennal G2 claw (over twice the length of the final segment) very closely match those reported for P. sarsi in the literature (e.g. Meisch 2000). The h1 seta on the L7 is slightly longer than that reported for European specimens and the Japanese specimens are missing the tiny denticles on the penultimate segment of this limb. This is the first record of this species from Japan. Previously known from Europe (see review in Meisch 2000). It was found amongst the root mats below willow trees.
