Type Locality: Germany, Schleswig-Holstein, Lubeck Bay, near Gromitz (see Rudolphi, 1822).
Vernacular Names: Sei Whale.

Distribution: Worldwide: cold-temperate to warm-temperate waters. Distributional records sometimes confused with B. edeni .
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA and IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: Reviewed by Gambell (1985 a). Rice (1998:75-76) separated this species into B. borealis borealis and B. borealis schlegelii Flower, 1865 (Northern Sei Whale) (Southern Sei Whale).
