The genus Ioniorhynchus can be recognized within the large Otiorhynchus complex of genera (Magnano 1998) by the elongate, slender, shining body, pronotum longer than wide, elytra about as wide as pronotum, eyes completely absent, rostrum longer than wide, antennae long and slender, epipleura curved at the level of hind coxae, base of elytra straight, closely fitting the base of pronotum, all femora dentate, aedeagus long and slender, hooked and curved at apex, S-shaped in lateral view.
