Type (lectotype, designated here):— MEXICO. 1842, F. M. Liebmann s.n. (C-1182! [preserved in alcohol]).
Nomenclatural notes:—In the protologue, Liebmann (1847) quoted two gatherings: “in sylvis umbrosis praedium Hacienda de Mirador Dept. Vera Cruz” and “in sylvis montanis primaevis declivitates orientales jugorum centralium Cordillerarum obtegentibus pr. Tepilongo Destr. Villa alta Dep. Oajaca”. Hansen (1978) cited two gatherings housed in C as the holotype: “ Liebmann sn, Mexico, Veracruz, Mirador, alt. 1000 m, 1842; sn, Mexico, Oaxaca, Tepilongo, alt. 1500 m, 1842 (mixed collection!, C, holo-). According to Art. 8.2 of the ICN the Hansen’s indication does not constitute an effective lectotype designation. We traced in C two syntypes of H. mexicana , preserved in alcohol in jars labelled “C-1181” and “C-1182”. According to Hansen (1980), the original material of H. mexicana form a “mixed collection”, but there are no clear indications of the nature of this mixture when analyzing the collection. Original labels cannot be read and it is not possible to discover to which jar each syntypes belongs. The jar labelled C-1182 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ) is the most representative of the structures described in the protologue and is here selected as the lectotype of H. mexicana , while the jar C-1181 is a remaining syntype.
