Type species: Cytaea alburna Keyserling, 1882 [= Cytaea severa ( Thorell, 1881) ], by subsequent designation.
Remark. Berry et al. (1998) distinguished Cytaea from the other genera by the combination of the following characters: retromargin of chelicera with one bicuspid tooth, promargin with 3 to 6 (usually 4 to 5) teeth. All tibiae, patellae and metatarsi normally with lateral spines; rarely metatarsus I lacks them. Tibiae each with a dorsal spine near base, sometimes lacking on tibiae I and II. Palpal tibiae and patellae are very short, as wide as long or wider. The epigynal septum is narrow and the epigynal fossa without an internal sclerotized pouch.
