Unio tigridis Bourguignat, 1852 View in CoL
Bourguinat (1852: 30) designated the type locality of U. tigridis as “In tigride flumine prope Bagdad urbem” [ Tigris River , Bagdad, Iraq]. The range of U. tigridis is listed as Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey ( Lopes-Lima et al., 2021). Annandale (1918) listed Unio mosulensis Lea, 1863 , Unio calliopsis Kobelt, 1912 , and Unio dignatus semiramidis Kobelt, 1912 from Iraq and today all are considered junior synonyms of U. tigridis ( Lopes-Lima et al., 2021) . Mienis (2013) verified the identification of archaeological specimens of Unio tigridis from a site near the Euphrates River in Iraq. Harris (1965) listed 14 Unio taxa and combinations based on Pallary (1939), lumped them together as Unio sp. , and noted a wide variety of substrates for this group, which should be recognized as Unio tigridis .
The reproductive biology of this species in Iraq was studied by Al-Mahdawi and Al-Dulaimi (2004).
