Sinanodonta woodiana ( Lea, 1834) View in CoL
The native range of Sinanodonta Modell, 1945 extends from China, Japan, Korea, Russian Far East, and northern Indochina ( Bolotov et al., 2016; Lopes-Lima et al., 2020). S. woodiana has been widely introduced into the lakes and rivers of Europe, Russia, United States, Hispaniola, Costa Rica, Malaysia (peninsula Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak), Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Myanmar ( Bauer et al., 2021; Bogan et al., 2011; Bogan and Schilthuizen, 2004; Bolotov et al., 2016, 2020; Djajasasmita, 1982; Fornillos et al., 2020; Vikhrev et al., 2017; Watters, 1997, 1999; Yurishinets & Korniushin, 2001; Zieritz et al., 2018a, b).
Bolotov et al. (2016) examined specimens and DNA from S. woodiana from Malaysia, and Flores Island, Indonesia. They noted shells of Sinanodonta had been reported from Indonesia (including islands of Java, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi) and the Philippines. S. woodiana was discovered to be comprised of about seven separate lineages including two separate invasive lineages (referred to in that study as the temperate and tropical lineages) ( Bolotov et al., 2016).
Kondakov et al. (2018) examined the COI haplotypes of S. woodiana specimens from Uzbekistan and determined they belonged to the temperate lineage of Bolotov et al. (2016). S. woodiana has been documented from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan from endorheic drainages, but they reported no reliable records for Sinanodonta species from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan ( Kondakov et al., 2020). They determined that S. woodiana introduced into Kazakhstan belonged to the temperate lineage. Specimens of S. woodiana collected from Myanmar also have been identified as belonging to the temperate lineage ( Vikhrev et al., 2017; Bolotov et al., 2020). Sinanodonta woodiana has been also reported from the Republic of Moldova ( Munjiu et al., 2020). Sinanodonta woodiana was imported into Israel in 1991, but all the animals arrived dead, and no recent records have been reported ( Mienis, 2017). The westernmost record reported for Sinanodonta woodiana in Asia was from Lake Sapanca Basin in northwest Turkey ( Ercan et al., 2013). However, a recent survey in Lake Sapanca failed to find any signs of this species (Lopes Lima et al., 2021).
