Alpheus Maindroni Coutière, 1898: 133 View in CoL , figs. 2, 2’.

Alpheus maindroni View in CoL . — Banner & Banner 1981: 35; Banner & Banner 1982: 203, fig. 62; Miya 1984: 95; Chace 1988: 38.

Material examined. Kuwait: 1 male, OUMNH. ZC. 2020.01.020, Failaka Island , eastern side, site 2, low tide, rocks, leg. M. Al-Kandari et al., 25.xii.2014 .

Description. See Coutière (1898) and Banner & Banner (1982).

General distribution. Widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, with records from the Red Sea, Djibouti,

Oman, Arabian Gulf ( Kuwait), Madagascar, Cocos Keeling Island, Philippines, Indonesia, Micronesia and Australia ( Banner & Banner 1981, 1982; Miya 1984; Chace 1988; Dehghani et al. 2019 a, 2019b; present study; see also Anker & De Grave 2016 for discussion of erroneous records from Singapore); some records require confirmation.

Ecology. Lower intertidal and shallow subtidal, especially on reef flats and coral reef lagoons; typically, under or inside coral rocks and massive coral “bommies” partly buried in coral sand with silt or mud; sometimes found together with fire worms, Eurythoe spp. ( Banner & Banner 1982; present study).

Remarks. The single specimen from Failaka Island represents the first record of A. maindroni from Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf. The taxonomic status of A. abumusa Dehghani, Sari & Naderloo 2019 , recently described from Iran and separated from A. maindroni on the basis of two vaguely defined morphological characters will be discussed elsewhere (Anker, in prep.).
