Synalpheus quinquedens Tattersall, 1921 View in CoL
Synalpheus quinquedens Tattersall 1921: 376 View in CoL , pl. 28, figs. 1–5; Ramadan 1936: 19; Banner & Banner 1981: 74, 92; Banner & Banner 1983: 105; Jones 1986: 153, pl. 43; De Grave & Ashelby 2011: 3; Naderloo & Türkay 2012: 5; George 2012: 285.
Material examined. Kuwait: 1 female, OUMNH. ZC. 2020.01.022, Failaka Island , eastern side, rocky substrate, leg. M. Al-Kandari et al., 24.xii.2014 .
General distribution. Indo-West Pacific, with records from the Red Sea (e.g. Suez, Gulf of Aqaba, Ghardaqa, Khor Dongonab, Suakin), Arabian Gulf ( Iran, Qatar, Kuwait), East Africa ( Kenya), Madagascar and Indonesia (e.g., Tattersall 1921; Ramadan 1936; Banner & Banner 1981, 1983; Jones 1986; George 2012; Naderloo & Türkay 2012).
Ecology. Lower intertidal to 64 m ( Banner & Banner 1983); possibly associated with encrusting sponges.
Remarks. The species was previously known from the Arabian Gulf based on unspecified material from an unknown locality collected by the “Danish Persian Gulf Expedition” ( Banner & Banner 1981). Since this expedition was conducted mainly along the Iranian coast, Naderloo & Türkay (2012) included S. quinquedens in the list of the Iranian decapod fauna.
Synalpheus quinquedens was also included in the popular field-guide to the intertidal macrofauna of Kuwait ( Jones 1986), with a short text accompanied by a highly diagrammatic, inaccurate illustration. Importantly, the diagnostic characters (presence of five strong rounded or subacute teeth on the posterior margin of the sixth pleonite) of S. quinquedens cannot be seen in the figure of the general habitus provided by Jones (1986). Therefore, the present specimen represents the first formal record of S. quinquedens from Kuwait, confirming the previous, rather vague records of the species from the Arabian Gulf ( Banner & Banner 1981; Jones 1986).
