Mimosa cineraria Linnaeus View in CoL , Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 1311. 1759.
["Habitat in India."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1500 (1763). RCN: 7661.
Replaced synonym: Mimosa cinerea L. (1753: 517, No. 10, non 1753: 520, No. 25).
Lectotype (Rico in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 476. 1997): [icon] "Acacia Maderaspat.spinosa Intsiae accedens, cortice cinereo, ramulis communi pediculo binis" in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 2, f. 1. 1691; Almag. Bot.: 4. 1696. - Epitype (Rico in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 476. 1997): India. Jottian, April 1806, Wallich 5299a (K; iso-BM).
Current name: Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce View in CoL ( Fabaceae : Mimosoideae ).
Note: Linnaeus simultaneously published both Mimosa cinerea L. (1753: 517, No. 10) and M. cinerea L. (1753: 520, No. 25). Realising his mistake, he renamed the former as M. cineraria L. (1759) and retained M. cinerea for the latter (see Art. 53.6 Ex. 19). Although the correct name for M. cinerea No. 10 in Prosopis is P. cinerea (L.) Druce , rather than P. cineraria (L.) Druce (Art. 53.6, Ex. 21), the use of P. cineraria is widespread, and Ali (in Taxon 53: 206. 2004) successfully proposed the rejection of M. cinerea (1753: 517, No. 10) to regularise this usage.
