Bombus gerstaeckeri Morawitz, 1875 View in CoL

Mountain species distributed by the Carpathians, Balkans, Alps and the Pyrenees. The species is considered threatened and is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of European Bees (Rasmont et al. 2015).

In the Iberian Peninsula it appeared in the Pyrenees ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ), Cantabrian Range, Picos de Europa and Sierra de Mampodre, between 1100 and 2200 m ( Obeso 1992, Ornosa & Ortiz-Sánchez 2004, Castro 2006).

This species has not been recorded in the present samplings ( Table 3 View TABLE 3 ). The total number of collected Pyrenean individuals, from 1971 to 1991, was 88 ( Ornosa 1991, Bosch 1999, Castro 2006), but only two of them were collected between 1991 and 2004 ( Bosch 1999, Castro 2006). This fact, together with the latest known information ( Castro 2006, Ponchau et al. 2006, Ornosa & Castro 2011), indicates an alarming conservation state. B. gerstaeckeri is declining ( Table 3 View TABLE 3 ), therefore it was assessed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Spanish Red List (Ornosa & Castro 11).
