This is the most widely distributed species of the genus, ranging from the southern United States to northwestern Argentina, including several Caribbean Islands and Costa Rica (Alajuela Province) ( Kirkaldy 1899c; Drake & Harris 1928a, 1932b; Hynes 1948; Drake & Hottes 1951a, 1952; Drake & Maldonado-Capriles 1956; Cobben 1960; Bachmann 1963; Roback 1966; Nieser 1970, 1977; Alayo 1974; Roback & Nieser 1974; Nieser & Alkins- Koo 1991; Mazzucconi & Bachmann 1993, 1995; Manzano et al. 1995; Aristizábal 2002; Padilla-Gil & Nieser 2003; Konopko & Mazzucconi 2005; Valencia et al. 2006; Morales & Molano 2008; Molano et al. 2008; Posso & González 2008; Torres et al. 2008; Morales & Castro 2010; Muñoz et al. 2010; Moreira et al. 2011b; Padilla-Gil & Arcos 2011; Lanigan & Hyslop 2011; Konopko & Mazzucconi 2011; Padilla-Gil 2012, 2016; Muñoz et al. 2012; Hyslop & Hunte-Brown 2012; Mondragón & Morales 2013; Padilla-Gil & García-López 2013; Herrera 2014). In Costa Rica, it was found in backwater areas of rivers, puddles close to rivers, and lagoons along the Pacific and Atlantic slopes up to 800 m a.s.l. It is herein recorded for the first time from the provinces of Limón and Puntarenas.
Material examined. Alajuela— San Carlos, Crucitas, Lagoon, 50 m a.s.l., 25. IV.2008, (B. Pacheco): 5 males, 1 female, 9 nymphs ( MZUCR) . Lake Cote , 700 m a.s.l., 23.V.2009, (P. Gutiérrez, D, Vásquez): 4 famales ( MZUCR) . Limón— Peje, Peje Lagoon, 28 m a.s.l., X 590,648, Y 239,939.3, Lambert N, 28. VIII. 2010, (B. Pacheco): 1 male, 1 female ( MZUCR) . Puntarenas— Esperanza Farm close to Esquinas River, 100 m a.s.l., 9.VI.1995, (L. Vik): 1 male, 1 female ( MZUCR) .
